Tacoma’s 6th Avenue neighborhood is the quintessential neighborhood for people who want to live in a community of historic homes. The neighborhood is a vibrant, thriving, dynamic community. The 6th avenue neighborhood is in Central Tacoma, between Proctor/UPS, West Slope, and Hilltop. 6th Ave has the highest concentration of restaurants, coffee shops, bars, and shopping in the city.

Burger Soeul and The Red Hot are two of the most popular spots for informal eating. Primo Grill, Asado, and The Table are local favorites for a night out. Neighbors love DOA (Dirty Oscar’s Annex) and Shakabrah for breakfast.

Why 6th Ave is so Great

6th Ave is funky and artsy, a favorite hangout for nearby University of Puget Sound students. Students love both studying and letting loose on the weekend. Tacoma’s 6th Avenue neighborhood has an abundance of cool shops to explore. Record stores, boutiques, coffee shops and salons are a big draw. By night, 6th Ave is hopping with great restaurants, bars, and live music.

What to do in 6th Ave

6th Ave is at a crossroads between neighborhoods. People are attracted every summer to the annual “Art on the Ave” event sponsored by the local business distrct and to the thriving 6th Ave Farmers Market that takes place every Tuesday in the spring and summer.

“Didn’t know until I moved here,” says 6th ave resident Melissa, “but there is an amazing walking trail from the northwest corner of Jefferson Park to North 27th St.”

Architecture

Homes on both the north & south sides of 6 Ave are similar in style, age, & architecture, but the price of homes on the south side of 6th Ave are considerably more affordable. Homes are usually older than 1960, with lots of Craftsman, Victorians, Tudors, & little cottages from the 1940s and 1950s.

I love living off of 6th! There are always good options for food and drink any time of the day, we have farmers market and the co-op, and I love being so central. Having UPS so near is nice because I like to workout on their track. I'm less than 10 min drive from point defiance, Ruston, downtown, or the East side or South Tacoma. Also, Art on the Ave is one of my favorite events of the year and it's right off my street!

It's so close to everything we like that we can walk to most everything we need normally. Close to restaurants and night life, close to grocery stores and the farmers market. We can be in downtown or on Ruston Way in less than 10 minutes by car. Great access to mass transit. Plus the houses in our area are about 100 years old, so there is a lot of architectural history and charm. 10/10, would live here... Oh wait! We already do.

6th Ave has great access to everything via whatever your preferred mode of transportation is. It's a 25 min walk to downtown/ 15 min via bike; 35 min walk to Ruston or Proctor and a 5 min drive to the freeways or 15min to the Tacoma Dome Station Transit hub. The neighborhood is fabulously walkable for those looking for dinner or a drink or just to get out of the house. And we love our neighbors! It's a transitional area with a fare amount of retirees, young families, and 20-30 something's.

We love the convenience of living so close to so many great restaurants, bars, and even groceries. Its great to be able to walk to so many places and to go on a walk around the neighborhood and UPS.

I love that I can walk to almost anything I want to do or need. Only thing missing is a corner store and/or somewhere for groceries, that is a drive to Proctor or the 16 interchange.

6th Ave is such an awesome hub. It is great to wake up and walk to the best breakfast spots, and then stop for a little shopping at one of the local stores. It was a little more lively than other places we have lived, but for the most part that's what we enjoyed about it.
