As Tacoma is becoming more expensive, a lot of people who would usually move from Seattle to Tacoma are kind of stopping sooner and looking to buy places in South King County. A few of these more affordable cities include places like Auburn, Kent, Lakeland Hills, Des Moines, and Federal Way. 

As you’re considering buying a home in South King County, what do you need to know? 

The market is still very competitive, but it’s not as competitive as Seattle or areas north of Seattle. You need to be super prepared as a buyer, but you do have a little more buying power. At the beginning of 2021, the average price to buy a home in South King County was in the $400-$450k range. 

What type of real estate is available here? 

People love that there are a lot of neighborhoods with homes from the 1970s and 1980s. There is also a ton of new construction here, and you’ll find lots of new developments to buy in. 

What are commuting options like in South King County? 

For many people, this area is the best of both worlds. Whether you need to commute south to Tacoma or Olympia or you need to commute north to Seattle or Bellevue, you’re just about 30-45 minutes to either area. Living in South King County is the perfect compromise if you have 2 people who need to commute in different directions. However, you’ll want to make sure that you stay on the I-5 corridor in places like Federal Way, Kent, Des Moines to make the most of this location for commuting.
